Hi, I’m Alexa.
I’m a sensory play teacher, homeschool mom of two, and the creator of the play-based method behind everything here. For 20+ years I’ve helped kids learn the way they’re actually built to — through play. With a 20K+ community and a feature on PBS Kids South Florida, my mission is simple: show you that teaching at home can be joyful, low-pressure, and full of play.
You don’t need to be a teacher. You just need a place to begin.
My story
I grew up thinking I was dumb.
School measured the things I wasn’t — neat handwriting, sitting still, the right answer on the worksheet — and missed the things I was. My creativity didn’t count for anything in that system, so I decided I simply wasn’t smart.
It took until college, studying advertising, for someone to finally measure what my brain could actually do. I graduated with honors and won the best portfolio award — and for the first time, the system told me I was good at something. That gap — being the kid school gave up on, then becoming the adult who refused to give up on other kids — is the spine of everything I’ve built since.
Before the blog
I was a mom before I was a mom.
My first classroom was the Boys & Girls Club, where I helped 56 kids bring their grades up — using play-based methods I didn’t yet have a name for. I just remembered being the kid who couldn’t learn the other way.
Long before my younger son was born, I was already mothering. Those were the years we were trying — and waiting — for a baby of our own, and I poured all of that mothering energy into other people’s children: my stepson since he was two, neighborhood kids at the library for spelling tests and homework, room mom at school. I was a mom before I was a mom — and play was always how I taught, even before I knew that’s what it was called.
The blog begins
Then I had my son — and learned it all over again.
When my son was born in 2018, I decided not to do daycare. By the time he was one, I was a lonely first-time mom — so I started toddler meetups for the company, and got certified in Learning Through Play so I’d actually know what I was doing. One mom asked me to teach it as a weekly class. I said yes. That sensory class is still running today.
I documented everything on the blog. And when COVID closed the playgrounds in 2020, I taught myself forest school and built a weekly nature class from scratch — that one’s still running too. Here’s the pattern of my whole life: I build the thing first, then go get certified in what I was already doing.
What I believe
Play isn’t the opposite of learning. It’s the delivery system.
Every program I teach is the thing I wish someone had handed me as a kid: permission to learn by playing. You don’t need to be a teacher. You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect setup. You need a simple plan — and permission to keep it light.

Where I am now
Today I homeschool my 8-year-old, still teach my two weekly classes, and still have to relearn my own lesson on the hard days — because knowing better and doing better under exhaustion are two very different things. That mom, on that day, is exactly who I make everything for.
