A Pre-Writing & Letter Recognition Activity for Preschoolers
Before children write letters, they need repeated practice with the shapes that form letters. This chalkboard activity invites children to explore letter shapes through storytelling, movement, and creativity, without pressure to “write correctly.”
By focusing on simple shapes, children build confidence, control, and awareness of how letters are formed.

Materials
- Chalkboard (or sidewalk)
- Chalk (multiple colors work best)
- Eraser
How to Do the Activity
- On the chalkboard, introduce the four basic letter shapes:
- Little stick
- Big stick
- Little curve
- Big curve
- Create a simple story using only these shapes.
For example:- A big curve becomes a rainbow
- Little sticks become grass
- Big sticks become a fence
- Curves turn into a sun or a smile
- Draw one shape at a time and name it as you go.
- Invite your child to:
- Trace the shape with their finger
- Trace it with chalk
- Copy the shape next to yours
- Let your child erase and redraw freely as the story continues.
Teaching Tip
Avoid naming letters during this activity unless your child brings them up first. The goal is shape familiarity and control, not letter mastery yet.
This foundation makes future letter learning easier, smoother, and less frustrating.
