Citric Volcanoes — A Fizzy Science Activity for Curious Toddlers

What’s better than a bubbling volcano? One thing your toddler can make with just a few simple ingredients! This Citric Volcanoes activity brings science to life through hands-on, sensory-rich fun that teaches cause and effect, prediction, and patience — all with a satisfying fizzy explosion.

It’s simple enough for 3-year-olds to do with supervision, and exciting enough to repeat again and again.

🧺 What You’ll Need

  • Small bowls or a muffin tin
  • Citric acid (found in the canning section or online)
  • Baking soda
  • Food coloring
  • Water
  • Optional: mini dropper, spoon, or squirt bottle

🧪 How to Set It Up

  1. In each bowl or muffin tin section, add:
    • 1 spoonful of baking soda
    • 1 spoonful of citric acid
    • A few drops of food coloring
  2. Add a bit of water to a cup (or use a squeeze bottle).
  3. Invite your child to pour or drop water into one of the sections and observe.
  4. Watch it fizz, bubble, and “erupt”!
  5. Try different colors or amounts and talk about what happens.
