Melted Pumpkin Sensory Bin Using Oobleck

Jump to recipe

Making Oobleck or goop is one of our favorite sensory activities. I don’t do it often because it can get very messy! (Manu gets too excited) but for this Halloween, it was the perfect combination!

Materials Needed to make this Melted Pumpkin Sensory bin

This activity was set up using cornstarch and water with orange food coloring. I also used a pumpkin decorating kit to present the activity. It was a melted pumpkin after all! To enhance the activity, you can make it smell like pumpkin spice by sprinkling some of the pumpkin spice over it.

How to Prepare Sensory Bin Base:

The base of this sensory bin consists of creating oobleck. A mixture of cornstarch and water that together create the perfect ooey-gooey consistency.

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid; it has properties of both liquids and solids. You can slowly dip your hand into it like a liquid, but if you squeeze the oobleck or punch it, it will feel solid.

Follow/print the recipe below to get the exact consistency for playtime.

How to play:

  • Set up your oobleck in a sensory bin, Ikea Flisat table of tupperware.
  • Place this container outside or in an area that if your toddler splashes, it won’t be ruining furniture or walls. (well, it won’t ruin them but it’s a pian in the butt to clean!)
  • Add in your pumpkin face elements. These where found at the Dollar Store. They are meant to be used to decorate a real pumpkin.
