One Year Old Lesson Plan | Week 7

I want to take this moment to applaud you. I understand doing activities with your child every week takes time, effort, planning and patience. Some people take the easy way out and deprive their children of fun, engaging and learning experiences like these.

I’m not saying I am the perfect parent, I am far from it. My child does watch Youtube – more than I would like him to – but I am also tired and from time to time need him to sit still. And to be honest, I like the songs too. I try to compensate it with lots of engaging activities and learning opportunities.

Ok.. so let’s get this week started because this week we are going to use two activities that will help develop with pre-writing skill.

Areas of Development for this week:

LESSON PLAN WEEK 7

Wash on, wash off

  • Objective: Develop the muscles required for pre-writing skills
  • Supplies for this activity: Kids table, sponge, water and a bit of soap

How To Play

What’s with the chores?! well, like I said last week, chores are life skills and are a way for our children to feel they belong and are part of this world. It is an important part of development.

This week, we are going to play to wash their tabletops. It is important that they use the table they eat at. Use their table or high chair to do this activity.

Washing a table is not just a chore but a crucial exercise to get your child’s muscles for writing later on in life.

The circling movement of washing a table is an aid to work the right muscles later needed to write. Wet the table and add a bit of soapy water.

Give your child a sponge, and direct him to wash the table in circular motions, and up and down. Practice as needed. This also shows responsibility for the life skill of “you clean after yourself” we all contribute to the world by helping take care of what we use.

Drop Q-Tips in a Container

  • Objective: Practice concentration and fine motor skills working with small items
  • Supplies for this activity: Q-tips, a box or a spice container

How to Play

Cut small holes on the lid of the box. Show your toddler how to insert the Q-Tips on the small holes. Then open the box to show your toddler where the Q-tips go after being dropped into the holes.

Take out the Q-tips and let your toddler try. This activity is great as a pre-writing skill and is a great independent play activity – supervise to ensure they are not misusing the Q-tips.

It helps later on with learning to grab a pencil.

Let your toddler play with both hands if he wants to. He will later decide what his dominant hand will be.

Learning Body Parts

Did you know that by 15 months your child should identify 4 body parts and by 20 months he should know 6?

My son at 15 months definitely didn’t know 4 and that’s because I didn’t really teach him any. I had no idea he was supposed to be learning that or that he was capable of learning them at this age.

As soon as I learned that you could teach them body parts at one year old, I went on the mission to start. Here’s how I taught him.

  • Objective: Identify correctly at least 3 body parts
  • Supplies: Just you and you can also use stuffed animals with easily identifiable body parts. Eyes, ears, nose. (if your toddler already knows this, choose different body parts, ie: arm, leg, feet)

How to Play

Throughout the day, you are going to be showing and pointing to one body part. Choose something easy to say and easy to see.

I started with this order:

  1. Nose
  2. head
  3. Ears
  4. Eyes
  5. Belly Button
  6. Toes

Point to your nose and say “nose”, then point to his nose and say “nose” then ask him/her if she can point to her nose “ show me your nose”.

Start with just one body part, and move up as he/she learns and identifies them all.

Use props: Use stuffed animals or doll to point different body parts.

Use books like this one to continue teaching body parts.

Use songs, to practice. Here is my favorite song for learning body parts. (just use the body parts you are working on and repeat a few times)

This is a great song for diaper changes as they have your full attention and are watching you every move.

Now that he has moved to other body parts, we like to sing “head, shoulders, knees and toes”

The key to success in learning them is to start with just one until and not move to the next until he/she has mastered it.

See You Next Friday!
