This month, our preschool curriculum focuses on scribbles, lines, stories, and the early foundations of writing. But before we rush into tracing letters or practicing handwriting, we are going back to where writing really begins: movement, imagination, hand strength, and meaning. This is exactly the kind of playful, developmentally grounded approach NAEYC describes as the power of playful learning — where real academic skills like writing grow out of joyful, hands-on experience rather than drills.
Your child will explore how marks can become roads, stories, animal tracks, letters, and ideas. Through sensory play, art, nature, movement, and story time, they’ll begin building the skills that support writing later on: fine motor control, visual tracking, language, confidence, and the ability to express what they see and imagine.
This is not a month about perfect letters.
It’s a month about helping your child understand that their marks matter.
Because before children write words, they need time to move their hands, make big messy lines, tell stories through pictures, and feel proud of what they created. That is how writing grows naturally: one scribble, one story, one playful moment at a time.

A gentle rhythm that helps you make the most of the 10 monthly activities — no strict schedule, just a simple guide to keep play easy and consistent.

💡 Use this rhythm to bring calm, connection, and creativity into your week — not pressure. Repeating activities is encouraged! Toddlers learn best that way.

Week 1 – Stories, Language & Meaning
- Animated Story Time: Owl Babies
- This book is available at Amazon
- We will start working on pre-K-readiness skills for the second half of our year. Academic and life skills are needed to embark on the preschool years.
- I chose this book because it touches on a subject that is very needed, and that is the fact that a child will miss mommy when she leaves, but MOMMY WILL ALWAYS COME BACK.
- Separation anxiety is a big one, no matter if you leave them in a preschool that’s part-time two times a week for 3 hours or a full-day one. Some toddlers/preschoolers will have a hard time with this transition (and so will moms… but we have Zoom calls for that!) When reading this book, I mentioned that Mommy will always return.
- I also like to read this book and change the little owl’s name to the child’s name. Kids love hearing their names in stories, so making change is a fun, engaging way to talk about “Mommy will come back for you.”
