Strengthening Little Hands Through Play
If you’ve ever wondered what truly prepares your child for writing, independence, and everyday tasks…
it starts with their hands.
New here? This month’s plan is one piece of our homeschool preschool curriculum guide, which shows how each month’s themes fit into a full year of learning at home.
Not with worksheets.
Not with tracing letters too early.
But through simple, repeated, hands-on play.
This month, we’re focusing on strengthening your child’s fine motor skills—the small muscles in their hands that support everything from holding a crayon to using scissors, feeding themselves, and exploring the world with confidence.
In May, you’ll notice a shift toward activities that invite your child to:
- Scoop, pour, squeeze, and transfer
- Use tools like droppers, tweezers, and scissors
- Build coordination, control, and confidence through play
These may look like simple activities—but they are doing powerful work behind the scenes. That is the heart of what NAEYC calls the power of playful learning: hands-on play that quietly builds the real skills children need for school and beyond.
They’re helping your child develop the strength, focus, and independence they need for everyday life and future learning.
And the best part?
They don’t require complicated setups or special materials—just intentional moments woven into your day.

In the video below, I’ll guide you through a simple 6-step approach to help your child build confidence and control with scissors using play-based activities you can easily do at home.
This month, we focus on building strong, capable hands through play—including skills like scooping, pouring, using droppers, tweezers, and scissors.
🎵 Circle Time: Moving & Strengthening Our Hands
This month, we’re focusing on helping children use their hands with confidence—and one of the simplest ways to support that is through songs and movement.
During circle time, children practice opening, closing, clapping, pointing, and coordinating their hands through rhythm and repetition.
These small movements may seem simple, but they play an important role in building the strength and coordination needed for everyday tasks.

💛 A Gentle Reminder
Your child doesn’t need to be “ahead” to be ready for school.
They need to:
- Feel safe
- Feel capable
- Trust themselves
And that… is built through play.
