Outdoor learning that actually counts as school

Homeschooling gives you the freedom to learn outside — but a park day on your own can turn into ninety minutes of “can we go home yet.” This is the difference between being outdoors and learning outdoors.

Every Tuesday, we meet at the same trail in Davie and work through a guided outdoor session built around what’s actually happening in the Florida landscape that month. Your child observes, collects, questions, and records. You’re right there with them — this is a class you attend together, not one you drop off for.

Multi-age is the point, not a compromise. A 4-year-old and a 10-year-old can stand at the same pond and both walk away with something real. The younger kids notice and name; the older ones measure, sketch, and explain. Siblings come together and work at their own level.

What a Tuesday looks like

Guided nature walk

We walk the trail with a question in hand — what’s blooming, what’s nesting, what changed since last week.

Hands-on investigation

Digging, sorting, measuring, water testing, collecting. The part where kids stop asking and start doing.

Seasonal focus

Each month follows one theme drawn from the South Florida seasons, so the learning builds instead of scattering.

Nature journaling

Older kids sketch and write what they observed. Younger ones draw and dictate. Everyone leaves with a record.

Free exploration

Unstructured time on the trail and in the open space — where the best questions usually show up.

Monthly field trip

One week a month we go somewhere new together — a preserve, a nature center, a different corner of Broward.

Come as you are. No nature background needed, no prep the night before, no worksheets to print. Bring water, closed-toe shoes, and a willingness to get a little muddy.

Who’s teaching

I’m Alexa — an early childhood educator, a homeschool mom here in South Florida, and the person who’ll be on the trail with you every Tuesday.

  • 15+ years teaching young children
  • Trained in Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf approaches
  • Former Education Director, with a Boys & Girls Club background
  • Featured on PBS KidVision
  • Homeschooling my own child, bilingual in Spanish and English

I started teaching in a Boys & Girls Club, working with 56 students who were behind — and watched play-based methods move them two grade levels. That’s the whole reason I teach this way.

This class is the version of school I wish every kid got: outside, hands dirty, questions first.

Frequently asked

What ages is this for?

PreK through 5th grade — roughly ages 4 to 11. It’s a multi-age group by design, and siblings across that range come together.

Do I stay with my child?

Yes. A parent or caregiver stays and participates for the full class. It isn’t a drop-off program.

What if it rains?

Florida weather being what it is, we play it by ear. If a class can’t run, I’ll let enrolled families know and we’ll make it up.

What should we bring?

Water, closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and clothes that can get dirty. I bring the materials for the activities.

Can we try one class first?

Absolutely — that’s what the $45 drop-in is for. If you decide to stay, you can move to monthly tuition the following month.

How do I pay each month?

Tuition is month to month. You’ll purchase the month you want to attend, and re-enroll for each month you’d like to keep coming.

Is there a registration fee?

No. You pay for the month or the class — that’s it.
