Puffy paint is one of my favorite types of paint to make. It does take longer to dry than using regular paint but it is so much fun once it is dry!
Top make puffy paint you will need:
- Shaving cream
- white glue
- washable paint or food coloring

Puffy Paint Recipe with Shaving Cream
Ingredients
- • Shaving cream
- • School white glue
- • Food coloring or washable paint
- • Thick paper: cardboard or cardstock
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix equal measures of shaving cream and school glue.
- Add five drops of food coloring or paint to each paint mix.
- Mix and enjoy painting on the cardboard.
Tips and Tricks when playinf worh puffy paint
Painting with puffy paint can be a lot of fun but you have to be careful it getting into other surfaces that are not the intended paper. Because it has glue as a base it will hard to get off from furniture and clothing. Always use protective equipment or clean up right away if it gets into places you don’t want a permanent paint stain on.
Activities to use puffy paint
I love to paint activities with books. I find that young toddlers tend to engage more with an activity if they can make the connection from the story in the book to the activity in front of them.
Dog’s Colors
The first time I did this activity in class was with one of my favorite color books. The book is about a white dog that goes around the house and his neighborhood and gets stained with different colors as he walks around.
Our activity was based on us painting all the stains dog had with our puffy pain.
For our little ones that still put everything in their mouth we did edible safe paint but for the older ones we did it with this recipe.
We prepared only three colors (red, yellow and blue) instead of all the colors mentioned in the book. I wanted the kids to discover new colors as they mixed the paints.
Using a mixed media paper, I drew a dog so they could add the spots of paint over it.
I provided foam paintbrushes for them to use but you can also use regular paintbrushes 🖌 too.
Painting a rainbow
For our virtual tot School we created an activity based around the rainbow. This was our first week learning about colors and every day we had a different activity.
We painted a rainbow (some printed out the rainbow template from this month’s Sing & Learn pack).
This time we also provided the three basic colors and we made purple for the rainbow mixing blue and red.
This type of paint takes a few hours to dry, but once it is dry it looks so cool! It is puffy and fun!
