Set out a variety of pom-poms and small loose parts like buttons, bottle caps, gems, or straws, and invite your child to create anything they want. It could be a face, a pattern, a silly animal, or just a mix of color and shape. The goal is not the end product, but to observe their process and creativity.
Try saying:
🗣️ “I wonder what you’ll make with all of these.”
🗣️ “Can you create something only using circles?”
🗣️ “I’m curious which materials you’ll use the most.”
Materials:
- Pom-poms (variety of sizes and colors)
- Loose parts (buttons, lids, gems, sticks, caps, straws)
- Tray, shallow bin, or large flat surface
- Optional: tweezers or tongs
- Optional: playdough base to stick parts into

Parent Tip:
Watch your child closely—how they group, sort, line up, or assign meaning to objects.
This is your chance to observe their learning style and how they make decisions.
You don’t need to step in—your role is to notice and support without interrupting the flow of their ideas.
Play Extension:
🎨 Take a photo of their creation and print it out for them to see their own designs
🌀 Create a story about the character or scene they built
🔄 Invite them to “change just one part” and observe how they shift their thinking
