This open-ended counting activity invites preschoolers to explore numbers through hands-on discovery and natural materials. A counting box encourages children to slow down, observe, sort, and connect quantities to numbers in a meaningful way — without worksheets or pressure.
This is an activity you can return to again and again as your child’s understanding of numbers grows.

🧺 Materials
- A box with dividers (or small containers placed inside a box)
- Natural objects such as:
- rocks
- seashells
- pinecones
- wooden pieces
(You can also add other natural materials you find along the way.)
🌿 How to Set It Up
- Go on a nature walk with your child and collect a variety of small natural objects.
- Place the objects inside the box, sorting them loosely by type if you’d like.
- Aim to collect at least 10 items total — you can always add more over time.
- Invite your child to explore the box freely before introducing any numbers.
▶️ How to Play
- Allow time for open exploration: touching, sorting, comparing, and discovering the objects.
- Count objects together naturally during play:
- “How many shells do you have?”
- “Let’s count them slowly.”
- To extend the activity, use acrylic paint to write the numbers 1–10 on small rocks.
- Add the numbered rocks to the box and invite your child to:
- match quantities to numbers
- place the correct number of objects next to each rock
- create simple counting games using the materials
💡 Teaching Tip
This activity doesn’t need to look the same every time.
Some days your child may focus on counting, other days on sorting or storytelling. All of it supports learning.
Follow your child’s lead and keep the experience playful and relaxed.
