But after years of working with young children in play-based learning environments, I’ve seen that writing struggles in preschool are rarely about letters themselves. Most of the time, the child simply hasn’t had enough opportunities to build the fine motor skills writing requires.
Research in early childhood development supports this observation. Studies show that fine motor development in preschool years is strongly connected to later academic abilities, including reading and math skills.
Writing is actually one of the most complex motor tasks young children learn. Before children can comfortably write letters, their hands need strength, coordination, and control that develop gradually through everyday play.
Understanding this process helps parents support their child’s development without pushing writing too soon.
Why Writing Is Physically Hard for Preschoolers
Writing requires much more than knowing the alphabet.
To control a pencil comfortably, children need:

But another important factor is something most parents never see: the structure of a preschooler’s hand itself.
Young children’s hands are still developing. Many of the small bones inside the hand and wrist are not fully formed yet and are still made largely of cartilage. As children grow, these cartilage areas gradually harden and fuse into fully formed bones, giving the hand more strength and precision.
In fact, the wrist bones that help stabilize the hand during writing continue developing throughout early childhood, and the bones in the hand are not fully mature until later in childhood.
If you look at an X-ray of a young child’s hand compared with an adult hand, you can clearly see the difference. A preschool hand shows large spaces between bones where cartilage is still forming, while an adult hand shows fully developed bones connected together.

Because of this, preschool hands naturally fatigue faster during tasks like tracing letters or holding a pencil for long periods.
Research on handwriting development also shows that fine motor precision and manual dexterity strongly influence handwriting control and legibility.
This is why play-based activities that strengthen the hands — squeezing, pinching, building, threading — are so important before children are expected to write.
When something feels physically difficult, children often avoid it. This doesn’t mean they aren’t ready to learn letters — it simply means their hands are still growing.

The Writing Framework pushes for formal handwriting from the moment children start school, chasing a target of 75% GLD by 2028. But at what cost?
The Must-Have Fine Motor Skills Before Writing
Occupational therapists often describe writing readiness as a group of foundational hand skills.
Before learning letters, preschoolers typically develop these abilities first.
Hand Strength

Children need strong hand muscles to control writing tools.
You’ll see this developing when children:
- squeeze playdough
- Use spray bottles
- pinch small objects
- open containers
These activities strengthen the muscles used later for writing.
Finger Isolation

Finger isolation means children can move their fingers independently instead of using the entire hand.
You may notice this skill when children:
- peel stickers
- pick up small beads
- manipulate small toys
- use clothespins
Finger control allows children to move a pencil with precision.
Wrist Stability

The wrist acts as the base that supports finger movement.
When the wrist is stable, the fingers can move more precisely to control a pencil.
Wrist stability develops through activities that strengthen the arms, shoulders, and hands, such as:
- painting on vertical surfaces
- building with blocks
- manipulating tools like scissors
- completing puzzles on the floor while lying on the stomach
- painting on the floor while in table top position
- drawing or coloring while resting on the elbows
When children work in this tummy-down position (called prone position), they naturally bear weight through their arms and wrists. This strengthens the muscles needed to stabilize the wrist during writing.
Strong shoulder and wrist stability allow the fingers to make the precise movements required for forming letters.
Hand-Eye Coordination

Writing requires guiding the hand based on what the eyes see.
Children practice this skill when they:
- stack blocks
- complete puzzles
- thread beads
- draw or build shapes
These visual-motor skills help children control lines and shapes once they begin writing.
The Developmental Sequence of Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor development usually follows this progression:
Exploration → Strength → Control → Writing
Children begin by exploring objects with their hands.
Over time, they develop the strength and coordination needed for more precise movements.
Writing is one of the final steps, not the starting point.
This is why play-based activities that involve squeezing, pinching, threading, and building are so important in the preschool years.
Signs Fine Motor Skills Are Developing
You may notice your child’s fine motor skills growing when they begin to:
- stack small blocks
- peel stickers
- string beads
- manipulate playdough
- Use scissors with assistance
- build with small toys like LEGO
These everyday activities are strengthening the muscles needed for writing later.
Why Worksheets Don’t Build Fine Motor Skills
Tracing letters and worksheets may look like writing practice, but they don’t always build the underlying skills children need.
If hand muscles are not strong yet, tracing can feel tiring and frustrating.
Play-based activities strengthen hands in ways that feel natural and engaging.
Children build fine motor strength when they:
- squeeze playdough
- open containers
- Use spray bottles
- thread beads
- pinch small objects
These playful experiences prepare the hand for writing without pressure.
When Preschoolers Are Ready to Begin Writing

Most preschoolers begin experimenting with writing when:
- They can hold drawing tools comfortably
- They show interest in drawing or making marks
- They have developed stronger hand control
At this stage, writing often begins with:

- drawing
- writing parts of their name
This experimentation is a natural step toward later writing skills.
Building Fine Motor Skills Through Play
Instead of focusing on writing practice, the preschool years are best spent strengthening hands through playful experiences.
