Why Make a Playdough Recipe With No Salt?
Traditional playdough recipes use salt as both a preservative and a texture booster.
The problem?
- Salt can be dangerous for dogs or younger children who might taste it.
- It can make the playdough feel grainy or stiff.
This no salt playdough recipe uses cream of tartar (or vinegar as a substitute) to keep the dough soft and longer-lasting, while also being much safer.
🧁 Ingredients for No Salt Playdough
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon oil (any kind works)
- ½ tablespoon cream of tartar (or replace with 1 tablespoon vinegar)
- Food coloring of your choice
👩🍳 How to Make Playdough Without Salt
Step 1: Mix Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, combine:
- Flour
- Cream of tartar (or vinegar if using)
- Oil
Have measuring cups and spoons ready so you can move quickly.
Step 2: Color the Water
Warm the water in the microwave for about 1 minute.
Add food coloring directly into the water and stir.
Step 3: Combine Wet + Dry
Pour the colored water into the bowl with the dry ingredients.
Stir with a spoon until it becomes too difficult to mix.

Step 4: Knead the Dough
Transfer the mixture to a tray or clean surface.
Knead with your hands for a few minutes until the dough becomes smooth and soft.

🧠 Troubleshooting Your Dough
Too Sticky?
Sprinkle in a little flour and continue kneading for 30 seconds at a time until the mixture becomes smooth.
Too Dry or Crumbly?
Add a few drops of water and knead again until the dough holds together.
The finished dough should be soft, smooth, and easy to squish — not sticky or crumbly.
🫙 Tips for Storing No Salt Playdough
- Store in an airtight container or zip-top bag.
- Because there’s no salt, it won’t last quite as long as traditional recipes — usually up to a week.
- If it starts drying out, add a tiny bit of water and knead it back to life.
