This activity invites children to explore numbers freely through hands-on materials, movement, and play. There’s no right or wrong way to engage — the goal is curiosity, observation, and connection with numbers in a natural, pressure-free way.

MATERIALS
Choose a few open-ended materials you already have at home:
- Loose parts (rocks, pom poms, shells, beads, blocks)
- Number cards, wooden numbers, or numbers written on paper
- Small containers, cups, bowls, or trays
- Optional: tweezers, scoops, or spoons
HOW TO PLAY
- Set out the numbers and loose parts on a tray or table.
- Invite your child to explore the materials freely.
- Let them decide how to interact:
- Lining objects up next to numbers
- Placing objects on top of numbers
- Counting, stacking, sorting, or grouping
- Follow their lead and observe what they notice.
- Use gentle language when appropriate:
- “You chose the number 3.”
- “You placed many objects together.”
- “I see you counting as you move them.”
There’s no expectation to complete a task — this is about exploration, not outcomes.
TEACHER TIP
If your child isn’t interested in counting yet, that’s okay. Simply naming numbers, touching them, or moving objects alongside them builds the foundation for future math understanding.
