Sensory foam looks magical and feels even better—fluffy, cloud-like, and perfect for tiny hands. This version uses aquafaba (the liquid from canned chickpeas), so it’s taste-safe for toddlers who still explore with their mouths. This month, we’re building an Under the Sea bin with foamy waves and sea creatures—and yes, kids can whip the foam themselves with a $11 milk frother (hello, independent play!).
I’m Alexa, a sensory teacher. We do this activity in my classes all the time—kids love the squish and scoop, and parents love the easy cleanup.
Why Aquafaba? (and how it beats shaving cream)
- Taste-safe: Ideal for babies/toddlers (still supervise).
- Stable foam with simple add-ins: Color, “sprinkles” (biodegradable confetti), or mini sea animals.
- Motor + sensory skills: Scooping, pouring, pinching, color-mixing, pretend play.
Competitors strongly emphasize cream of tartar to keep peaks stiff; adding it—and chilling the liquid—improves volume and longevity.
Aquafaba Foam Whip
Notes
Create stations of different color of water and frothers (they are very inexpensive) for the kids to create their own foam bin. They love to use the frother!
Ingredients
- 1 can (approx. ¾ cup liquid) chickpea brine (aquafaba), chilled 30–60 min for best results
- ¼–½ tsp cream of tartar (stabilizer for stiff peaks)
- Food coloring or liquid watercolors (optional)
- 1 drop child-safe essential oil like lavender/chamomile
- Equipment
- Hand mixer, stand mixer, or milk frother (kids love this role!)
- Large mixing bowl, sensory bin or tray, scoops/cups/spoons
Instructions
- Drain & Chill: Strain the chickpea liquid into a bowl; chill 30–60 minutes for faster whipping and better structure.
- Add Stabilizer: Sprinkle in ¼–½ tsp cream of tartar.
- Whip: Mix on high 2–5 minutes until stiff peaks form (like whipped cream). If using a frother, move it around to incorporate air.
- Color & Scent (optional): Divide into bowls; add drops of color and 1 drop of kid-safe essential oil; briefly whip to combine.
- Play: Transfer to a tray/bin. Add cups, bowls, spoons, and sea animals. Encourage pouring, scooping, “wave making,” and treasure hunts.
- Teacher Tip: Give kids the frother job = instant buy-in + hand strength practice.
Under the Sea: Guided Play Prompts using Aquafaba Foam

- Foam Waves + Boats: “Can you make tall waves? What sinks/floats?”
- Hidden Treasures: Bury shells or mini fish and “rescue” them.
- Color-Mixing Science: Start with blue + white; add a tiny green dollop to explore ocean hues.
- Foam Sculptures: Use muffin tins, cookie cutters, and cups to “build” reefs.
- Vocabulary Boost: squishy, stiff, frothy, swirl, scoop, pour, rescue, sink/float.
Troubleshooting Aquafaba Foam
- Foam won’t whip / stays watery: Chill aquafaba, add cream of tartar, whip longer. A stand/hand mixer aerates faster than a blender.
- Collapses quickly: Add a bit more cream of tartar and avoid oily add-ins (oils deflate foam).
- Grainy texture: Over-whipped; fold in a spoonful of fresh aquafaba to loosen.
- Color stains? Use liquid watercolors sparingly and play on a tray; wash hands right after.
Safety & Cleanup
- Taste-safe ≠ snack: Supervise and discourage eating; bin may include non-food toys. Montessori From The Heart
- Allergies: Although aquafaba is chickpea water (not the bean), avoid if legume allergies are a concern.
- Easy clean: Play in tub/outside; wipe surfaces when done. Compost or rinse foam away.
Learning Benefits (What parents & teachers care about)
- Fine Motor: Scooping, squeezing, and pinching strengthen pre-writing muscles.
- Sensory Processing: Comfort with wet/foamy textures.
- STEM: State change + aeration (liquid → foam), color-mixing, sink/float.
- Language: Descriptive words, sequencing (first, next, last), pretend-play scripts.
FAQs
How long does aquafaba foam last?
Best in the first 45–60 minutes; re-whip briefly if it softens.
Can I prep it ahead?
Chill the liquid ahead; whip right before play for the fluffiest peaks.
Milk frother or mixer?
Both work. Mixers give volume fastest; frothers let kids help (great engagement).
Optional: Soap-Foam (Bubble Foam) Alternative

For my classes, I cannot make the aquafaba foam ahead of time. It will completely melt and its a mess! so I opt to do soap-foam instead.
Note: Soap foam isn’t taste-safe. Choose gentle, tear-free soaps and supervise
Soap-Foam Ratios (Rainbow Bubble Foam):
- 2 parts water : 1 part baby bubble bath/dish soap; whip 1–2 minutes to stiff peaks; add lots of color. Busy Toddler
Or - 1.5 cups water + ¼ cup dish soap; beat ~2 minutes. Little Bins for Little Hands
