Materials
- Chalkboard or sidewalk chalk surface
- Chalk
- Small container of water
- Paintbrush
How to Do the Activity
- Using chalk, draw one shape on the board:
- Big line
- Little line
- Big curve
- Little curve
(These shapes connect directly to the letter-building masterclass.)
- Invite your child to dip the paintbrush in water.
- Ask them to trace over the shape with water, slowly erasing what you drew.
- Repeat with different shapes, giving plenty of time for exploration.
- If your child seems ready, draw:
- The first letter of their name, or
- A full name (one letter at a time)
- Allow your child to trace and erase at their own pace.
Important Tip for Parents
Try to avoid letting your child use the paintbrush like a sponge or eraser. The goal is guided tracing, not wiping.
If your child isn’t ready yet:
- Let them paint freely with water
- Turn it into an open-ended exploration
- Revisit the guided tracing activity in a few weeks
