Homemade Sand Recipe

I wanted to go to the beach so bad to let Manny play with sand. Unfortunately, it was a weekday and it was not going to make it. I didn’t know it was so easy to make DIY Play Sand.

I searched on Pinterest and I found how to make moon sand. When I went to my pantry I only had whole wheat flour and I wasn’t going to make a trip to the store just so I could buy flour. I needed an activity to entertain my toddler now and I needed to use the supplies I had.

DIY Play Sand recipe is simple, just two ingredients are needed!

I went ahead and used the whole wheat flour and played with the proportions between baby oil and flour to get the texture I wanted.

Ingredients:

  • Whole Wheat Flour
  • Baby Oil

Good to have:

  • Shallow bin
  • Large Bin (to contain the playing area) (I have this 15gallon plastic bin from Ikea )
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • beach toys

DIY Play Sand Recipe Directions:

Using a bowl pour about 2-3 cups of whole wheat flour.

add in about 1 1/4 of baby oil and mix with gently with a spatula.

Check the consistency, is it too dry? you should be able to grab a handful and hold it tight. If it stays in place you have a good ration. If it falls apart as soon as you open your hand, you need a little more baby oil.

When you have the consistency you want, pour it onto the shallow bin and place inside the larger sensory bin. The larger bin will be you catch it all bin where all loose sand will fall when playing. Making cleanup easier.

Add some beach toys to your bin and invite your toddler to play.
