How to make playdough without cooking it (No-cook Playdough Recipe)

Playing with playdough is a lot of fun, but did you know it is also an exercise to work on fine motor skills? Learn how to make this easy learning tool with a no-cook recipe.

Playdough is great for fine motor development.

Playing with playdough helps strengthen fine motor skills in many ways. All that rolling, squeezing, pinching and patting is great for little hands and fingers.

Fine motor skills are great skills for pre-writing skills. It allows a child to hold pens and pencils correctly and to be able to do up buttons and zips.

To make no cook playdough recipe you will need:

  • 1.5 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of Boiling Water
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 Tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 2 Tbs oil (I used canola oil)
  • Food coloring

This recipe is non-toxic but flour might contain bacteria when uncooked. To kill such bacteria, cook your playdough at 350 degrees in the oven for 10 minutes. Then let it cool down and proceed with the recipe.

  1. Gather all of your ingredients to make this easy dough toddler recipe. These measurements are per color you want to make.

Step 1. Gather all of your materials

To make no cook playdough you will need to use a bowl add all of the dry ingredients and mix well. Flour, salt, cream of tartar

On a separate bowl mix the food coloring and boiling water.

Step 2. Mix Dry Ingredients on the bowl

Mix the dry ingredients, the oil, and colored boiling water and mix with a spatula.

Once the water cools down a bit, you can start kneading the dough.

Step 3. Knead on a table

When you have a good consistency, add some flour onto your cutting board and knead some more. If the dough sticks to your fingers it needs more flour. Add a little bit at a time to not dry the dough. If you dry it by mistake, just add a little bit of water.
