Salt dough is one of my favorite dough recipes to make because you can save your art sculptures making this material the main ingredient for a lot of Christmas ornaments, dinosaur activities, and even learning the numbers and ABC’s.
Salt dough gets created and molded like playdough so it is really easy for the kids to use. When your desire sculpture is completed, all you need to do is put it in the oven and your sculpture is permanently hard and will last the test of time.

Salt Dough Recipe For Kids
Ingredients
- • 1 cup of all purpose flour
- • 1/2 cup of fine salt
- • 1/2 Water
- • Food coloring (optional)
- • Bowl or basin to mix the dough
Instructions
- • Add the flour in the basin/bowl.
- • Add salt to the flour and stir a little.
- • Add the water little by little (If you want, you can also make a colored salt dough by adding a little food coloring to the water before mixing it with the flour.), stirring first with a spoon or a wooden stick and then continue kneading with your hands. (The children will love this part).
- • Make the dough into different figures or shapes.
- • Arrange on a baking sheet (it is recommended to use waxed paper under them or to grease the base so that they do not stick to the paper).
- • If you have made some figures and want to let the dough dry you have two options:
- 1. You can air dry it, which can take a day or two depending on the thickness. On wet days it may take even longer, or it may not also dry out thoroughly and spoil if it is very humid, and it rains. (The dry and sunny climate is ideal for letting the salt dough figures dry).
- 2. The other option is to dry the dough in the oven at a low temperature of about 120 degrees maximum. To do this, you first put the figures cold in the oven and then turn it on to gradually catch the temperature. (Eye! If you put too much heat suddenly the figures could crack). The approximate drying time is approximately two hours, turning the figures over to dry thoroughly on both sides.
